Vintage Oaxaca Barro Negro Angel Bell
Primitive, quiet, and wonderfully imperfect.
This vintage black clay bell takes the form of a small angel or robed figure, its broad bell shaped skirt rising into a simply modeled body with folded arms. The surface is dark and matte, retaining the marks, irregularities, and texture of its handmade construction.
A small clay clapper hangs beneath the hollow skirt on blue cord, transforming the sculptural figure into a functioning bell.
Barro negro pottery is closely associated with San Bartolo Coyotepec in Oaxaca, Mexico, where black clay has a long tradition of being formed into vessels, bells, religious figures, and decorative objects.
Beautiful displayed among collected ceramics, folk art, or sculptural objects, where its worn surface and handmade character can stand entirely on their own.
Vintage condition with surface wear, irregularities, and variations consistent with handmade pottery and age. Blue cord appears to have been used to secure the clapper. Please review photographs carefully for condition.
Dimensions: 4 ¾ “ H x 3 ½ “ W
