This vintage round table mat is pieced together from narrow strips of assorted textiles, braided into concentric rings of faded blue, coral, pink, green, burgundy, brown, cream, and flashes of patterned cloth.
A wide black braided border grounds all that color, while contrasting zigzag stitching traces the individual bands and makes the construction part of the design.
Look closely and no two sections are quite alike, giving the piece the wonderfully improvised quality of something made from what was already at hand.
Beautiful beneath a bowl or vessel, centered on a table, layered into a shelf display, or simply left visible as a small piece of textile folk art.
